government, and later repurchase of the hides.

The collection also includes two account books of the Talbotton Railroad Company, owned and operated by the Persons family,
which ran from Talbotton to Paschal. The account books document income and expenses of the railroad from 1881-1887 and 1909-1912.

The bulk of the collection (1881-1909) consists of correspondence, financial statements, receipts, and legal documents pertaining
to Gilliam's mercantile business. Family correspondence (1882-1898) consists of letters to and from Gilliam's daughter, Sallie
Myrt while living in Maxeys or while she was attending LaGrange Female College. Other correspondents include Lucy Durham writing
from Agnes Scott College (Decatur, Ga.) or Athens (Ga.) and Maude Williams. The collection also contains photographs, programs,
and invitations relating to the LaGrange Female College.
